'Thalaimai Seyalagam' series review: Commendable writing in this complex tale of power play

Vasanthabalans films consistently explore political themes, addressing caste, class, or societal issues. In his latest work, 'Thalaimai Seyalagam', Vasanthabalan delves into the core of politics, presenting a narrative about feudalism and the rise of Naxalism as a counterforce. Spanning eight episodes with three interwoven storylines, the series takes viewers across India, ultimately linking all threads to a single individual. 'Thalaimai Seyalagam' is a political thriller with a whodunnit element, leading audiences through a complex exploration of governance, policy changes, and political intrigue. Despite the challenge of connecting the numerous plot points, the series is compelling enough to even pique the interest of the apolitical. In 'Thalaimai Seyalagam', Vasanthabalan weaves together three intricate storylines. On one hand, Chief Minister Arunachalam (Kishore) and his family face a corruption scandal that threatens their political standing. Concurrently, Inspector Manigandan (Bharath) is on a mission to solve the murder of a fellow police officer. Adding to the complexity, CBI officer Nawaz Khan (Aditya Menon) is delving into a 15-year-old cold case. While these disparate narratives eventually converge, the series journey is marked by numerous twists and obstacles, making for a challenging yet engrossing watch. In 'Thalaimai Seyalagam', the convergence of multiple storylines necessitates strong world-building, an aspect the series could have executed better. The series opens in Jharkhand with a 15-year-old crime, abruptly shifting to the present day with the case transferred to the CBI. Before viewers grasp the initial victims identity, theyre introduced to Chief Minister Arunachalam. This back-and-forth creates confusion when the Jharkhand case resurfaces through Nawaz Khan. Additionally, the series features numerous lead characters, and despite the use of labels for introductions, it takes time to understand their connections. For instance, Amudhavalli (Ramya Nambessan) is introduced as Arunachalams daughter and Tamil Nadus Finance Minister. Soon after, Minister Hariharan (Niroop Nandhakumar) refers to Arunachalam as Mama, initially suggesting he might be Amudhas husband. It is only later revealed that he is Arunachalams second son-in-law. This rushed world-building forces viewers to spend two to three episodes piecing together the characters and their relationships. Viewers who are unversed in politics might find the events in Thalaimai Seyalagam a bit challenging. For those unfamiliar with feudalism and Naxalism, however, the series still provides something to chew on while hinting at a deeper exploration in a potential second season. It also offers surprisingly profound and unpredictable themes. While some may guess the culprit mid-season, the central characters motivations remain veiled until the very end. Ultimately, the climax that dots all is and crosses all ts makes for a brilliant payoff, justifying the wait and confusion all along. Performances and writing are possibly the most commendable aspects of 'Thalamai Seyalagam'. Sriya Reddy plays the lead role of Kottravai, a brave and defiant journalist and political advisor. Sriyas very presence on screen makes you think of her loud, powerful scream from Thimiru, where she played the villain Easwari. Kottravai is also a strong woman, but she nonetheless chooses diplomacy, literary intelligence, and patience to achieve what she is set out for. Kottravais quiet strength shines through in her dialogue. Lines like Merku Thodarchi mala mela oorura erumbu, indha malaiye naama dhaan thaangarom nu nenachidhaan, spoken when Chief Minister Arunachalam faces immense pressure, showcase her strategic mind. She further quotes a line by Kannadasan, making Kottravai a woman of her brain versus a woman whose emotions take over in difficult times. Sriya steps out of her comfort zone to provide a restrained performance, one that makes you side with her character, even if her actions are morally ambiguous. Besides creating the richly developed Kottravai, Vasanthabalan, along with writers SK Jeeva and Bharani Giri, has crafted profound arcs for every other character in Thalaimai Seyalagam. Inspector Manigandans relentless pursuit of justice is rooted in his Army upbringing and the loss of his father in battle. CBI officer Nawaz Khan, a devout Muslim, observes his Ramzan fast with full conviction while meticulously investigating a challenging case. The series also explores deep relationships and personal revelations. The bond between Minister Selvapuviarasan (Santhana Bharathi) and CM Arunachalam is beautifully depicted, as is a poignant scene between Durga (Kani Kusruti) and Maya (Sarah Black), where Maya uncovers a significant truth about her life. Additionally, Amudhavallis darker intentions are revealed when she accuses her father of ruining her life, showcasing her complex character. These intricate character developments elevate 'Thalaimai Seyalagam' beyond a typical political crime thriller, making it a compelling drama with deeply rooted characters. The climax of 'Thalaimai Seyalagam' provides a wonderful connection back to the series title, as it reiterates that change can only be made where all the decisions are takenat the headquarters. With some characters dead and others creating a potential return for another season, we wonder what season two might have in store for us. At the end, Thalaimai Seyalagam is a series filled with characters with flaws and their own justifications for their actions. As the credits rolled, I couldnt help but get reminded of Swami Vivekanandas quote: Truth can be stated in a thousand different ways, yet each one can be true. Series: Thalaimai Seyalagam Cast: Sriya Reddy, Kishore, Bharath, Ramya Nambessan, Kani Kusruti Director: Vasanthabalan Streamer: Zee5 Rating : 3/5

'Inga Naan Thaan Kingu' movie review: Chaotic assembly of random ideas and weak humour

'Inga Naan Thaan Kingu' begins with a prologue detailing terrorist serial bombings. Then the film introduces us to Santhanams Vetrivel and his wacky attempts to get married. And then new characters barge into the frame and the whole affair turns into slapstick comedy. And before you catch a break, the film pulls the carrying-the-dead-body comedy trope and drags you along with the corpse for the remainder of the story. Such a cornucopia of randomness might work well for the kind of chaotic energy demanded by comedies. And that is precisely what 'Naan Thaan Kingu' is going for. However, the incoherent story and the barely working comedy ensures we are left with two hours of nothing but chaotic randomness. Even with a group of vaguely-defined terrorists, Santhanams protagonist remains the most horrible person in the story. Vetri buys an apartment for 15 lakhs to fulfill societys (alleged) expectations for an eligible bachelor. And he aggressively hunts down a prospective bride, just so he can get a dowry of 15 lakhs to repay the money. You can definitely wring humour out of a supremely unlikeable protagonist, by pointing out his flaws with a joke or two. However, the film somehow presumes we would still like him, and wants us to sympathise with him. Thambi Ramaiah and Bala Saravanan play Vetris father-in-law and brother-in-law, respectively. While their gags are usually a hit-or-miss, their cartoonish shenanigans get progressively over-the-top only to crumble into inanity by the end. Santhanam attempts plenty of meta humour in the film; where he references real-world happenings, his own films, comments on the casting choice of the film, the flow of its screenplay, and its similarity with other films. Some meta references are refreshing. Like when Vetri is caught by the terrorists and he looks at Gopi Prasannas character and says, Ivanukku ellam double acting role kudutha ippadi thaan nadakkum. However, after a while, the meta references reek of desperation to connect with the audience. This desperation is all the more pronounced in the scenes where Santhanam uses the word cringe to lash out at Thambi Ramaiah and Bala Saravanans characters. Even before the jokes land, and even before you process them, Santhanam jumps in to tell you how cringe the jokes are. The premise, the setting, the long list of supporting cast, and even the brand of wacky adventure, feel outdated. However, even with an incoherent screenplay, the dialogues and the humour could have saved Inga Naan Thaan Kingu, which is unfortunately not what happened. D Imman delivers passable tunes in his signature style but even the composer succumbs to the films desperation to connect with the audience, with the mashup of all the viral funny dialogues that plays during a chase sequence. As the film haphazardly jumps from one plot thread to another, we wonder if the film has anything to say and how the title connects to the theme of the story, or if it has any theme at all. One could argue that it is best not to dissect a mainstream comedy film. In which case, at least the humour could have worked or the story could have felt like a coherent whole. What we are left with are small patches of chuckles in a two hour long succession of one random plot thread after another. 'Inga Naan Thaan Kingu' suffers from a muddled screenplay with random ideas stitched together with paltry humour. While the supporting characters try to make up for the weak dialogues with physical humour, a visibly uninterested Santhanam pulls down the film even further. As the film throws one gag after another, and attempts a joke with every dialogue, some lines do manage to crack a smile, through sheer statistical probability. But as the tedium sets in towards the end of the film, we remember the long patches of dull moments more than the occasional jokes that made us laugh. Director: Anand Narayan Cast: Santhanam, Priyalaya, Thambi Ramaiah, Vivek Prasanna, Bala Saravanan Rating : 1.5/5

'Election' movie review: A laudable attempt at showcasing ground-level politics

It wont be an overstatement to believe that the protagonist of 'Election', Natarasan is the grown-up version of Kumaresan, the boy from director Thamizhs first film 'Seththumaan'. Kumaresan helplessly looks on as his grandfather dies due to a drunk duel between two caste Hindus, he does not understand what is going on. In 'Election', Kumaresans confusion is verbalized by Natarasan, when he says, I dont understand what is this politics about, in more than one instance in the film. Natarasans father (George Maryan) is someone who romanticises his grassroots position in a political party. He is sidelined after seeking a ticket from the partys district secretary in Vellore. Heartbroken by this and other such incidents, Natarasan, who is an engineer by profession, emerges as an independent candidate in an upcoming election. The film begins as a sons journey to redeem the pride of his father. However, Election, with its complex layers, is more than just its premise. Watch out for some brilliant performances from Vijay Kumar, Dileepan, Pavel Navageethan, and George Maryan. The writing of 'Thamizh' and 'Azhagiya Periyavan' makes up for below-par performances. An incorrigibly poor performance could not be spotted even upon close scrutiny. The narration could have become a confusing mess if it was handled carelessly. However, the frayed familial ties between multiple families have been integrated well into the drama surrounding the election. Familiar themes like friends turning foes and vice versa, betrayal, change of allies, switching party loyalties, and gaining and losing of trust make a lot more sense with the interpersonal exchange and history that the characters share. There are as many subplots about who one is to another, with the potential to pull us away from the central story. Thankfully, whenever a character loves, hates, trusts, kills, and saves someone in the film, they do it in order to stay afloat politically. Since every action carried out by characters has an underlying intention to keep his/her political career intact, our attention too stays intact. Standing apart from other serious election thrillers that portray the lead as a virtuous, but helpless man looking to turn the tables through ballot, 'Elections protagonist enters politics devoid of principles or knowledge. He is also a flawed candidate who believes greasing the voters hand would turn the mandate in his favour and does it. There is a constant indicator that he is a misfit in politics, not because he is evil incarnate but is gullible and cant think beyond his familys wellbeing. Breaking stereotypes of an all-perfect hero in Tamil cinema, Natarasan learning what is politics throughout the run-time both brings the character close to reality and also makes for an interesting character arc. The character arcs of Navageethan and George Maryan are interesting as well. The particular scene where George Maryan lets go of his prestigious katchi thundu gets a perfect placement. Election doesnt believe in one final do-or-die polling that could seal the fate of all. By displaying the under-the-table understanding between two seemingly rival factions/parties, the film shows us the POV of politicians who trivialise polls. Such a realistic portrayal of politics is a healthy departure from films of this genre. However, this does not make Election a flawless film. The director could have exercised more attention to the level of detail in depicting the proceedings of the local body elections. Barring a few campaigning scenes, the film fails to convey how it is conducted. Another shortcoming is that the film which unravels in the time span of 10 years, comes to life only during elections. Much water would have flown under the bridge in the meantime, but all characters react to what happens in the previous election only the next election as they seem to be in a pause mode until then. The songs and the background do not meet the standards set by Govind Vasanthas earlier works. Thamizh delivered a strong political statement in his first film 'Seththumaan'. 'Election' lingers one step behind the raw and realistic filmmaking we witnessed in the directors first film. Election still manages to impress, as the director did not veer into anything outlandish in a desperation to go mainstream. Director: Thamizh Cast: Vijay Kumar, George Maryan, Vathikutchi Dileepan, Pavel Navageethan, Preethi Asrani Rating : 3/5

'The Garfield Movie' review: Generic plot and lively animation serve up a moderately fun watch

'The Garfield Movie' is a harmless, enjoyable ride. It is almost nostalgic for how it is reminiscent of the feeling we experienced when we watched television cartoons in the evening after school. We would be amused by the wacky adventures and goofy humour of these animated characters, so engrossed that we still wouldnt have changed out of our school uniforms. On such occasions, the adults who pass by might take a gander at the screen and find themselves chuckling, forgetting the broad notion that, animation is for the children. This is the kind of warm, comforting feeling that 'The Garfield Movie' goes for, and almost succeeds at. The film is old-school in its story treatment, the one-liners, and even in how there are animated characters chasing each other. However, the film still manages to win us over, leaving you with a warm cushy feeling that lingers even after you leave the cinema halls. 'The Garfield Movie' has the charm of the Toy Story franchise, in both the style of animation and the visual gags. The premise is familiar and straightforward, like a classic cartoon. The Monday-hating, Lasagna-loving, eponymous feline (Chris Pratt) has set out on an adventure with his father, Vic (Samuel L Jackson), and their pet, Odie (Harvey Guillen)-The house cat is out in the world! There are a number of possible ways the story could go from here, and the film takes almost all of these predictable routes. However, the execution makes up for the predictability. Garfields famous fourth-wall-breaking is a refreshing touch, that helps the film stand above the classic cartoons it was trying to replicate. As the writing is so comfortable being generic, it ends up disconnecting the audience. It fails to strike any emotional resonance with the characters, The film also does not provide a satisfying arc to the characters. For instance, the antagonist, a female cat named Jinx (Hannah Waddingham), seems to have been added just for the sake of having an antagonist, as the plot couldnt bring out a conflict that could fit well with the initial premise. The stakes for characters like Roland (Brett Goldstein) and Nolan (Bowen Yang), who are Jinxs henchmen, havent been clearly explained, so the villainy doesnt come across effectively; it feels like its there just for the sake of it. However, it is not that the film limps entirely on the emotional aspect. The writing, despite being functional, has incorporated some effective moments. The scenes featuring Jon(Nicholas Hoult) and the pets and Garfields final interactions with the Vic are delightful to watch. These moments significantly contribute to the much-desired emotional impact that we were anticipating. The one-liners and the humour work effectively. Characters like Bull, Otto (Ving Rhames) or the Animal Control officer, Marge (Cecily Strong), give the directionless plot a sense of purpose. The story becomes more predictable as new challenges are thrown at 'Garfield'. The feline will, of course, emerge victorious in the end. To rescue such a predictable scenario, animation comes into play. While not stellar, the animation still pulls our focus away from a dull screenplay. In one of his fourth-wall-breaking conversations, Garfield says, Tom Cruise and I do our own stunts. Chris Pratt and Samuel L Jackson have done a commendable job with their voice acting. However, its Hannah Waddinghams portrayal of Jinx that stands out Despite the flaccid screenplay and a familiar storyline, the voice-acting, the charming animation, and the nostalgic warmth with which the story is executed make sure that the film leaves a warm memory in our minds. Something we could hold on to, to keep our spirits high, as we get ready to face another Monday. Director: Mark Dindal Cast: Chris Pratt, Samuel L. Jackson, Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong Rating: 2.5/5

'Switch { case n' movie review: Behind every line of code lies a human story

Switch { case n: Director: Chethan Shetty Cast: Vijay Lalitha Surya, Shwetha Vijaykumar, Prithvi Raj, Vijay Siddaraj, and Karthik Vaibhav Rating: 2.5/5 As its title itself implies, debutant director Chethan Shettys 'Switch { case n': is a film steeped in coding references that interestingly and cleverly merges software coding concepts with cinematic storytelling, making it particularly appealing to those fluent in languages such as C++ and Javascript. That being said, director Chethan, who himself is an IT professional, paints a vivid picture of IT life, drawing from the palette of personal experiences and making the film attractive to non-techies as well. The film revolves around Siddharth (Vijay Lalitha Surya), an ordinary IT fellow with dreams of becoming a cricketer who hails from a middle-class family. He is an introverted youngster with ambitions. As he steps into the gleaming halls of his new IT company, replete with all the amenities one could dream of, Siddharth finds himself navigating the maze of office politics while being in pursuit of recognition. Chethans film also explores the challenges of probation, the dynamics of office life, and the complexities of navigating on-site work, all while weaving in themes of friendship, power play, and relationships. Through Siddharths journey, we witness the tug-of-war between his aspirations and the harsh realities of corporate life, worsened by his coworkers scheming and the temptation of outside opportunities. In parallel, we see Siddharths romantic entanglements, particularly his affection for Navya (Shwetha Vijaykumar), whose intentions blur the lines between genuine affection and opportunistic exploitation. As Siddharth tackles corporate reshuffling, he faces a stern test, revealing the harsh truths of career advancement in the competitive software engineering realm. Chethan, in his debut, has tried to bring authenticity, offering a raw, unfiltered portrayal of IT life. Except for Vijay Lalitha Surya, Santosh Karki, and Raja Balawadi, who are known names, the film is filled with mostly newcomers (Prithviraj, Vijay Siddaraj, Karthik Vaibhav). 'Switch { case n': tries to decode the nuances of a hard-working employees existence while also shedding light on the universal complexities of dreams and aspirations. In essence, 'Switch { case n': isnt merely a film; its a symphony of bytes and pixels, meticulously connecting with the souls of IT aficionados and career-oriented individuals alike. Its a reminder that behind every line of code lies a human story, fraught with challenges, triumphs, and progress. For those fluent in the language of IT, 'Switch { case n': is a film worth not merely watched but rather deciphered. So, sit back and take on a journey through the binary, ambition, and its adversity.

'Sureshanteyum Sumalathayudeyum Hrudayahariyaya Pranayakadha': An aesthetically rich satire that bites off more than it can chew

After a short prologue, Sureshanteyum Sumalathayudeyum Hrudayahariyaya Pranayakadha (SSHP) opens with a sequence involving the natural death of an elderly woman, which ultimately makes way for one of the films titular protagonists, Sureshan, to return to his roots. Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduvals quintessential quirkiness in presenting satire is on full display here, with the dead womans family feeling anything but grief. Interestingly, this is quite reminiscent of how the directors debut film, Android Kunjappan Version 5.25 (2019), begins with Rajesh Madhavans character performing the last rites for his father, who is presumed to be dead. Like in his previous film, SSHP also features the director in a cheeky cameo appearance, here at the beginning, as an auto driver who brings Sureshan just before the funeral rites begin. As Sureshan starts weeping upon seeing his deceased grandmother, the auto driver asks him the fare with a straight face, Your total loss is just 3,450. The film contains many such brazen English lines throughout, delivered by its large rural ensemble, and the deadpan humour hits the right notes. Sureshan and Sumalathas sweet-yet-brief love story was one of the major attractions of the directors previous film, Nna Thaan Case Kodu (NTCK). As a spin-off intended to extrapolate the backstory of the celebrated couple, SSHP turns out to be an experimental romantic satire that feels tedious after a fairly engaging first hour, where the quirky treatment works to a great extent. In one of the recent promotional interviews for the film, Ratheesh mentioned that time travel does happen in SSHP but without the help of any device or portal. Set primarily against the backdrop of amateur theatre in Payyannur, the film shifts timelines randomly on a whim. For example, characters standing outside a house in the post-2000s might find the setting suddenly changing to the 1960s when they move inside. One could interpret these shifts as the director suggesting that the idea of love is timeless. However, the films overindulgence in the theatre play within the filmblurring the lines between reality and fictionleaves the audience feeling high and dry, even if it might be alluding to Shakespeares famous lines, All the worlds a stage, and all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances. It falls short as a love story, in terms of emotional connection, something NTCK accomplished in a short time. However, SSHP works considerably well when it turns into an unabashed satire taking political jibes. The segments depicting Sumalathas father opposing her relationship with Sureshan effectively address caste politics and historical manipulation. At the same time, some of Ratheeshs possibly intended metaphors are lost in translation. To credit where it is due, SSHP is incredibly rich aesthetically, technically, and musically. The visualization of the beautiful song Premalola, composed by Dawn Vincent and sung by Sushin Shyam, stands as a testament to that. As Sureshan and Sumalathas elbow joints make contact, the way the visuals convey that when they are together, nothing around them matters, is masterfully shot by Sabin Uralikandy. Also, you can see the kind of time shifts mentioned above in this song itself, which is edited seamlessly by Akash Thomas. Even the art and costume departments shine brightly in making the films different timelines look authentic. Similar to NTCK, SSHP can also boast a wonderful ensemble cast. Almost everyone fits the bill while adapting to Ratheeshs idiosyncratic world. Reprising their roles as Sureshan and Sumalatha, Rajesh Madhavan and Chithra Nair do not miss a beat, even if you may not end up rooting for them in this longer narrative. As the latters madcap father, also a chronic alcoholic, Sudheesh steals the show with his comic timing. A performance that is perfectly loud without going overboard. Kunchacko Bobans return as Kozhummal Rajeevan, in a brief cameo, felt like a deus ex machina. In its totality, SSHP, which works to an extent as a satire, ultimately bites off more than it can chew as a romance. Film: Sureshanteyum Sumalathayudeyum Hrudayahariyaya Pranayakadha Cast: Rajesh Madhavan, Chithra Nair, Kunchacko Boban, Sudheesh Director: Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval Rating : 3/5
